Work is starting on brand new homes for rent in Riccall, as part of a much wider £22m investment in new affordable housing by Selby District Council and the Selby & District Housing Trust.
The five new properties at Landing Lane in the village are the latest in a series of developments delivering new, high quality homes for rent to help meet the need for affordable homes in the area.
The housing development partnership between Selby & District Housing Trust and Selby District Council has already delivered new homes in Tadcaster and Byram.
The investment in building new homes is just one way in which the partnership between Council and the Housing Trust delivers new homes. As the planning authority, the Council's also working with developers to support new homes for the open market at large and smaller scale sites across the area too.
Selby District Council's Executive Member with responsibility for housing, Cllr Richard Musgrave, explained, "The Riccall homes - all two bedroom family properties - are being built on land that was used previously for Council-owned garages. One of the ways in which we're delivering new homes is by using the land we already own differently.
He added, "The Selby district is the fastest growing area in North Yorkshire. We're one of the safest areas in England, we've got great schools and fantastic transport links, plus we're seeing big business investment too which is opening up new opportunities and jobs.”
The homes will be designed, built and managed by the Selby & District Housing Trust and all will be for rent. They'll be allocated through North Yorkshire Homechoice. People in need of local affordable housing will be able to bid for these properties if they meet certain criteria for housing.
Chair of the Housing Trust, Cllr John Mackman, said, "The joint vision of the Trust and the Council is to build and manage quality modern homes in the district. These are new affordable homes for families who need them, which also support the local construction industry and create new jobs.
“And the quality of the homes we build is really important to us. The homes that we built recently at Tadcaster have won awards for their standards, and we aim to deliver really good quality homes here at Riccall too. The Housing Trust will manage these homes to offer high quality family homes for people in our area."
Martin Gerrelli, CEO of the building contractors, Starfish Group, added “Provision of sustainable housing is one of the greatest challenges facing national and local Government. The commitment of Selby District Council and the Housing Trust to develop garage sites for the provision of affordable housing in areas of high demand is both logical and innovative and we are delighted to be the construction partner to deliver the Riccall housing scheme. I am excited to participate in this launch event as we look forward to successfully completing this project as a potential precursor to other similar schemes in the Selby area”.
It's expected to take around 32 weeks to complete the new homes. The development in Riccall has been designed by NPS Architects and is being built using the Efficiency North construction framework.
