Mark Addy

Mark Addy made his big breakthough as Dave in ‘The Full Monty’, delighted American tv audiences with his portrayal of a Homer Simpson-like couch potato in ‘Still Standing’ and has appeared in blockbuster programmes such as ‘Game of Thrones’ and ‘Atlantis.’ The round features of Mark Addy are known to millions all over the world. And he’s one of York’s favourite sons.

His family’s connections with the city go back more than a hundred years and his father spent his working life as a glazier at York Minster. No wonder then that Mark has a passionate love for all things Yorkshire – his hero is Geoffrey Boycott, his favourite pastimes are walking along the York city walls and scrambling over Brimham Rocks on family days out. And his wife of 20 years, Kelly Johnson, and their three children still live in North Yorkshire.

After studying at RADA in the early 80’s, Mark’s first television appearance was in ‘The Ritz’ and parts in programmes such as ‘A Very Peculiar Practice,’ ‘Heartbeat’ and ‘The Thin Blue Line’ soon followed. But it was his role in ‘The Full Monty – the 1997 film about six unemployed Sheffield men who form a striptease group – which catapulted Mark to fame and also brought a Bafta nomination.

This led to Hollywood, and the part of Fred Flintstone in ‘The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas.’ There followed a part as an American blue-collar, beer-swilling dad in the US sitcom ‘Still Standing’ – a show not seen in the UK. ‘Maybe nobody wanted to buy it,’ says Mark philosophically and with a slight sense of relief.
Meatier roles followed as King Robert Baratheon in ‘Game of Thrones’ and Hercules in ‘Atlantis’. This summer, Mark was back on our screens in the BBC drama ‘New Blood.’

A stunning career, and with Mark still in his fifties there’s sure to be much more to come. But he remains a grounded Yorkshireman – happiest in a no-nonsense pub serving real ale alongside compatriots who,he says, ‘never let you get away with much!’
