British illegal immigrant in ‘international criminal organisation’ shot dead in US

Salis Hanrahan, 20, was shot in Philadelphia on 8 July as construction workers installed siding on a home.

Witnesses said they heard an argument inside the home before Mr Hanrahan walked outside and collapsed on the road with a gunshot wound to his chest, NBC Philadelphia reported.

He was taken to hospital and pronounced dead.

Police arrested the home’s owner, 75-year-old George Barr and he was charged with murder, possession of an instrument of crime and recklessly endangering another person.

A neighbour described him as a retired firefighter and veteran, adding: “He’s always friendly. Every time I’ve encountered him.”

Erin Kelly told the outlet: “It’s just crazy that it happened here. It’s always quiet here, so for something to happen like this, it just shocked us all.”

A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said Mr Hanrahan was from the UK and had entered the US illegally.

They told NBC Philadelphia that Mr Hanrahan had been denied a visa after officials determined he was affiliated with an international criminal network known as “The Travelling Conman Fraud Group”.

The group, which is made up of UK and Irish nationals, entered the US illegally and took part in a construction and money laundering fraud scheme, officials said.

Sky News has contacted the DHS and Foreign Office for comment.
