Five dead after school shooting in Oregon, with children among those killed according to reports

The shooting took place at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend on Thursday, with police saying that children were among the victims.

Two sources told the Associated Press that the number of fatalities was preliminary and could change, while one said that the suspect was between 15 and 16 years old.

Meanwhile, Sky’s US partner network NBC News reported that four people, including children, were among those killed.

Police responded to the Oregon school at about 1pm local time (9pm UK time) after a first call reporting a gunshot being fired into a car.

After arriving at the scene, police learned that the suspect “had been shot and killed”. It is unclear whether the suspect is among the five deaths.

Sheila Miller, a spokesperson for the Bend Police Department, told reporters earlier that investigators had yet to confirm who shot the suspect.

A subsequent police statement online said that authorities “have confirmed there were multiple victims,” with at least two taken to hospital, and that “children are among the victims”.

Classes, activities and athletic events across Bend-La Pine Schools have been cancelled for Friday.

Oregon governor Tina Kotek said on Facebook that “we must come together and support each other, neighbour to neighbour, Oregonian to Oregonian” following the “tragic event”.
