Deputy Chief Fire Officer Niall McKiniry presented a Chief Fire Officer Commendation to Robert Hawkings, recognising his swift and selfless actions during an incident in August.
While travelling to the Foreshore, Robert noticed a person in visible distress who had climbed over the railings of a bridge above the A63. Without hesitation, he stopped to check on them and climbed over the railings himself to prevent them from falling onto the carriageway below.
His actions prompted other passers-by to stop and help, holding onto both Robert and the person while emergency services attended. Firefighters from Calvert Lane Green Watch were first on scene and quickly took over, ensuring the safety of both individuals.
Robert’s bravery and compassion in a moment of crisis were recognised by attending crews, who nominated him for a commendation.
Robert attended Calvert Lane Fire Station with his family to receive the commendation in person and meet the firefighters from Green Watch who were first on scene. The visit gave the crew the opportunity to talk with him and reflect together on the events of that day.

“In a moment of real danger, he showed immense courage and compassion. While we always urge people to call emergency services rather than intervene directly, Robert’s instinct to help and protect another person is deeply admirable and deserving of recognition.”
