£479,438 has been secured to help the City of York Council prevent homelessness and provide accommodation and support where it’s most needed.
This Government funding supports the Council’s aim to make rough sleeping “rare, brief and non-recurring”.
A proportion of this funding will be used to support homelessness prevention and support services offered by voluntary, community and faith organisations in the city. Among the ways the Council will use the funding will be to:
- Reduce and prevent rough sleeping by providing tailored support for residents facing the most complex challenges, and support their long-term recovery.
- Increase prevention services to help residents find accommodation and ensure fewer people sleep rough for the first time
- Develop existing partnerships between the Council and the voluntary, community and faith sector
- Strengthen multi-agency approaches to rough sleeping and street activity in the city centre
- Prepare emergency accommodation ahead of winter 2025/26.
Cllr Michael Pavlovic, Executive Member for Housing, said:
“Our new homelessness and rough sleeper strategy is to make homelessness brief, rare and non-recurring. We really welcome the additional funding from Government to further support the work our teams have already done this year. This includes supporting over 300 households from losing their homes and helping those who have experienced homelessness to move into their own home.”
