Drypool Bridge works in Hull ‘progressing well’

Hull City Council has issued an update on the ongoing works to Drypool Bridge. Last month the city centre bridge, which traverses the River Hull, was closed to allow for repairs to be carried out.

The council has now issued an update on the works that is being undertaken by contractors on site. The exact end date that is being worked towards is unknown, but Hull City Council anticipate the work will be completed in ‘late November.’

Work is said to be “progressing well” on the bridge, according to the council. The following work is now underway:

  • Transverse beam hydro-demolition is being carried out with robotic technology – successfully eliminating an identified risk
  • Column reconstruction is underway, with doweling works currently in progress
  • Desilting works and under deck concrete repairs are continuing steadily
  • Access hatch surveys have now commenced
  • Deck nosing reconstruction has started, with new concrete poured and new stainless-steel nosing installation due this week

In addition to the bridge itself being closed, Alfred Gelder Street has also been closed between the Lowgate junction and Drypool Bridge. This has been a serious cause for concern for businesses on the street such as Food for Cowboys and The White Hart pub.

Both companies have expressed their concerns over the impact on their income. Responding to such concerns, a council spokesperson previously said: “The council’s business support team has been to visit the businesses affected and set out what steps they will be taking to support them while the road closure is in place.”

The closure of Alfred Gelder Street is also linked to Hull’s upcoming District Heat Network. Work is underway on the £125m project which includes laying pipes below a number of street in the city, including Alfred Gelder Street.
