Boost for Bradford’s zero emission bus fleet

Bradford will receive £8 million in funding through the Government’s NO2 Programme—boosting the district’s zero emission bus fleet and infrastructure as part of a major push toward greener, cleaner public transport. This investment will be ringfenced for Bradford district.

Bradford Council has worked closely with Government Ministers following the publication of the bus retrofit programme findings to secure this funding, reinforcing the district’s priority status in national clean air efforts. The new resources will accelerate the city’s progress in meeting the legal objectives of the Clean Air Zone (CAZ), launched in 2022, which has already led to measurable reductions in nitrogen dioxide and associated improvements in public health.

Bradford Council is scaling up sustainability projects across infrastructure, industry and innovation.

These initiatives include:

  • Bradford City Centre Walking and Cycling Improvements
  • Low Carbon Hydrogen and Mass Transit Tram System developments
  • Southern Gateway & Rail Station regeneration
  • Industrial Decarbonisation Prospectus
  • City Village development
  • E-bike Share scheme

Leader of Bradford Council, Councillor Susan Hinchcliffe said:

“Cleaner air makes a difference to people’s lives and means our children, in particular, have a healthier start in life.  The bus fleet in the district continues to contribute to air pollution in some areas.  This needs to change.

“I met with Ministers some months ago now to make the case for investment in Bradford buses, and I’m therefore delighted with this announcement. Government have listened, understand the importance of clean air in Bradford and are investing in us. This will now help us achieve cleaner air faster.”
