There have been chaotic scenes in Bradford City Hall as the Council’s annual budget meeting was paused due to a public protest.
The meeting had not long started and was just about to move into discussion of the 2025/26 budget when it was interrupted by shouts of “shame” from the public gallery.
Sheets of paper also appeared to have been thrown from the gallery onto the Council Chamber below.
Lord Mayor of Bradford Councillor Beverley Mullaney, chairing the meeting, advised members of the public that they would need to stop interrupting or they would be removed.
When the shouting, which also included chants of “Hinchcliffe out,” continued Cllr Mullaney advised members the meeting would be paused, and called for security to clear the public gallery.
Councillors and officers vacated the Council Chamber.
Some of the protesters are from the Acorn Union, and a banner displaying the union’s logo was unfurled over the balcony.
The budget is expected to include a 9.99 per cent Council Tax rise and millions of pounds worth of cuts.
