Do you know the law on E-scooters?

With the festive season fast approaching, Humberside Police are encouraging anyone considering purchasing or gifting an e-scooter this Christmas to familiarise themselves with the legal requirements associated with their use.

Recent statistics revealed a rise in collisions involving e-scooters. Across the force area, reported casualties have risen from 22 in 2022 to 29 in 2023, with 11 e-scooter riders killed across the UK in 2023 underlining the need for greater awareness around the use of e-scooters.

Sergeant Di Kemp from the Roads Policing Unit said, “Many riders, particularly young people, may not be aware of the legal implications of riding e-scooters in public spaces. E-scooters are intended for use on private land with the landowner’s permission.

“E-scooters are subject to the same laws and regulations as motor vehicles. This includes the necessity of registration with the DVLA, licensing, insurance, and adherence to road traffic laws. People who purchase and ride an e-scooter in public may not realise they are committing various offences but could risk fines and points on their driving record.

“We want people to be able to make an informed decision before buying them, which is why we are trying to raise awareness about the laws surrounding e-scooters so we can make sure everyone on our roads stay safe.

“If you are looking to buy an e-scooter in the run up to Christmas – please consider the legalities of their use before you do so. Your awareness can help ensure safer roads for all.”
