Energy efficiency upgrades for low income households in the East Riding

700 low-income households in the East Riding will receive energy efficient upgrades from new council and Government funding.

The Government, through the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ), has allocated £1.6 million of its Warm Homes Local Grant to the East Riding to fund upgrades to 103 private sector homes. Eligible properties across the region will receive wall insulation, loft top up, glazing improvements, and heating upgrades.

The council is partnering with one of the ‘big six’ energy suppliers to deliver the works to enhance local homes which expected to start in June 2025 and be completed by December 2027.

Additionally, DESNZ has provided a further £1.6 million to help deliver energy efficiency measures for 597 social housing properties across the East Riding. This will include the installation of solar panels and LED lighting to some of the least energy efficient housing within the council’s social housing stock.

The council itself will also contribute £3.3 million toward the project which will reduce the quantity of energy imported from the grid and lower residents’ energy bills. The project also seeks to improve the energy performance ratings of the properties to EPC C or above, in line with the Government’s target of every social housing property to have an EPC C rating by 2030.

Councillor Gary McMaster, East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s cabinet member for planning, housing and infrastructure said: “We are proud to invest in our social housing stock, and to support low-income residents across our region.

“These projects will play a crucial role in improving energy efficiency, lowering bills, and supporting our environmental objectives.”

Upon announcing the Warm Homes funding in March, the Government’s for Minister for Energy Consumers, Miatta Fahnbulleh, said: “Living in a warm, comfortable home should not be a luxury. It is a right that has been out of reach for too many people for too long.

“As part of our Plan for Change, we are powering on with our Warm Homes Plan, upgrading cold and draughty homes so they are warmer, cleaner, and cheaper to live in.”
