As you start the Christmas shopping and bag bargains in the black Friday and cyber-Monday sales, Humberside Police Economic Crime Unit are encouraging residents to be vigilant.
In the three months leading up to Christmas last year, £85.9K was lost from online shopping fraud in Humberside – that’s an average of £511 per person!
Detective Sergeant Dan Brittain from the Economic Crime Unit said: “As part of #OpYuletide, we’re launching our 12 festive frauds in the lead up to the Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales.
“Whilst we look to enjoy some time with loved ones, fraudsters don’t take a break and continue to impersonate banks, companies, and people you may know in an attempt to defraud you of your hard earn cash.
“The impact that fraud can have not only financially but emotionally and mentally can be exhausting and continues to be the highest concern for members of the public in an ever-advancing online world.
“Fraudsters can be difficult to spot, and they put in a lot of effort to make their communication look legitimate so it’s important to take your time and not act too quickly.
“We really want to empower people to be able to protect themselves and would encourage you, before making any purchases, to do your research, trust your instinct and choose your payment methods wisely so you can enjoy a fraud free Christmas.
“Over the next 12 days, we’re going to be sharing 12 different types of fraud to be weary of throughout the festive period and if you have any concerns or questions, make sure to contact us via our non-emergency number 101 or by following #SayNoToFraud #TakeFive on social media.
