Six seating areas known as ‘parklets’ are to be removed from Princes Dock Street, just 18 months after they were installed.
The parklets are set to be replaced as a part of the wider regeneration of Princes Dock Street and Humber Street in which Hull City Council hopes to make the streets more accessible and inviting.
The improvements made to Princes Dock Street and Humber Street are a part of a new ‘maritime trail’ which will seek to connect parts of Hull’s maritime history together.
Parklets first landed on the streets of Hull in August 2023 in a bid to help boost the volume of outdoor seating in the city. At the time, the council’s Portfolio Holder for Regeneration and Housing, Cllr Paul Drake-Davis said they would “bring numerous virtues” to the city, however, amongst the public parklets split opinions with some questioning whether they are really needed.
The soon to be removed parklets on Princes Dock Street are to be replaced by new seating options, new trees and landscaping whilst the parklets themselves are set to be put into storage whilst a new location for them is decided on, the council has confirmed.
Councillor Mark Ieronimo, Portfolio Holder for Transportation, Roads and Highways, said: “As we prepare the area for contractors, we are ensuring a smooth transition into the next phase of this project, which will bring exciting improvements to Princes Dock Street and creating vibrant outdoor spaces for everyone to enjoy.”
The construction work is expected to commence in the coming weeks, bringing exciting changes that will enhance the urban experience.
