Enquiries are being made into recent reports of begging on Princes Avenue in Hull, Humberside Police have confirmed. It comes after residents have raised concerns regarding the issue in the area.
The LDRS contacted the police force to find out what will be done to address the issue after members of the public raised concerns over the recent prevalence of beggars. The part of the street near the Sainsbury’s Local is said to be of particular concern to residents.
A resident, who lives on a side street off Princes Avenue said: “It’s been an issue for a long time. The problem seems to get a lot worse in the summer months. I’d feel unsafe walking at night if I was a woman.”
However, he did say: “This is by no means the only street in Hull where you see that type of behaviour.”
Humberside Police’s Neighbourhood Policing Sergeant Scott Foster said: “We remain committed to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all who live, work, and visit the Princes Avenue area. In response to recent reports of begging, our officers are conducting enquiries and continuing to work closely with our partners to address community concerns.
“Through enforcement of the Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO), we’re taking targeted action to address anti-social behaviour such as street drinking and begging. Our approach is centred on intervention while ensuring individuals are directed toward the right support.
“A dedicated multi-agency tasking group has been established to streamline collaboration across services including homelessness outreach teams and scheduled operations to deliver positive and sustainable outcomes. While enforcement is a necessary element, our strategy prioritises long-term solutions and responsible engagement.
“We encourage anyone who witnesses begging to report it via our website or by calling 101. If you wish to help those affected, donating through recognised local charities to ensure your support reaches the people in the most effective way.”
