Officers from the Humberside Roads Policing Unit are tackling those suspected of driving under the influence of drink and drugs.
From Monday 1st til Monday 15th December, the team have done a total of 605 breath tests and 40 drug wipes as part of ‘Operation Yuletide’
Inspector John Rickells said:
“Over the last couple of weeks, alongside their role of patrolling fast roads, dealing with collisions and supporting wider policing operations my team have been out targeting routes identified as having higher collision rates. They have been proactively carrying out roadside vehicle checks, breathalysers, and drug wipes.
“605 breath tests have been carried out so far, and within that period across the force area we have arrested 9 drivers under the influence of drugs and 10 drivers over the drink drive limit.
“In addition to this, officers across the force, as part of their day to day duties, have arrested a further 17 people for drug driving and 34 for drink driving.
“Officers across the force and in my team will continue all year round to stop any vehicle they suspect is being driven under the influence, ensuring these risks are removed from our roads.
“An essential part of the campaign is educating road users. By carrying out these tests, we aim to raise awareness of the dangers and consequences of driving while impaired.
“Our officers will continue to challenge and hold accountable those who make the reckless decision to drive whilst under the influence.
“We have seen the devastating consequences that drink driving, and drug driving can have – one drink too many, one bad choice, can mean the difference between life and death.
“Of course, we want people to enjoy themselves through the festive season, but we continue to urge people to also prioritise planning their journey home ahead of going out to celebrate.”
