Today, Tuesday, 25 November, marks White Ribbon Day. A national campaign dedicated to ending male violence against women and girls, to challenge harmful attitudes, raise awareness, and promote a culture of respect, safety, and accountability.
Throughout the next two weeks, Humberside Police will be out and about alongside partnering agencies, youth groups, and charities engaging with local communities and attending events across the area.
Detective Chief Inspector Nathan Reuben, the force lead for White Ribbon, said:
“Our dedicated teams from the Protecting Vulnerable People (PVP) Unit, Safeguarding Governance Unit (SGU) and Domestic Abuse and Safeguarding Investigation Teams (DASIT) are deeply committed to ending male violence against women and girls.
“This year’s theme, #WeSpeakUp, is something we actively champion across the force. This encourages men to use their voices to challenge sexism, harassment, and abuse. Behaviours such as sexist jokes, catcalling, and inappropriate comments may seem harmless, but they can contribute to a culture that puts women and girls at risk. Every time something that doesn’t feel right is ignored, an opportunity is missed to set a better example.
“As part of our commitment, we now have over 40 White Ribbon Ambassadors and Champions within the force who have pledged to speak up and make a difference in creating safer communities by challenging harmful attitudes and promoting respect and equality.
“We need women and girls to feel safe and listened to when coming forward in reporting violence and abuse. Our specially trained officers work closely with partnering agencies across the region to support victims and prevent and bring perpetrators to justice.
“With the collective effort of our community, we can make a meaningful difference. Together, we can ensure that victims are heard, supported, and protected, and create a community of respect and safety for everyone.
“There is never an excuse for violent behaviour, and it is important for victims to know, you can come to us whether that is to report it or for additional support.
“We take all reports of abuse extremely seriously and are committed to working with our partners and communities to ensure those affected feel safe, and live free from violence and abuse.”
