Significant regeneration work is now underway at Costello Playing Fields, Hull City Council has confirmed. A new 3G all-weather pitch is set to be among the additions to the site.
Improvements at the site will also include a new changing facility, additional parking, and an EV charging point. The works follow the recent reopening of the running track at Costello Stadium.
The project looks to create a state-of-the-art year-round sports provision in west Hull, providing a high-quality facility for community user groups during peak times, such as evenings and weekends. The 3G pitch and changing facilities will be used by Hull College during the day during term time.
Cllr Rob Pritchard, portfolio holder for culture, leisure and customer services at the council has spoken about the exciting plans. He has said: “I am delighted that the council is able to start these major improvement works for Costello Playing Fields.
“This project benefits from considerable investment by the council and we’ve taken on board public opinion about the site and incorporated that into our plans. To have another state-of-the-art sports facility for the people of Hull, including residents, sports club members and, in particular, its students and young people, is fantastic and I look forward to seeing it once completed.”
Contractor Hull Esteem Consortium Limited will carry out the works which are expected to be completed by autumn 2026. Whilst all efforts will be made to minimise disruption, public access to the car park will be suspended and the car park closed from time to time, advanced notice will be provided.
Following its recent improvements, Costello running track has now also received Track Mark accreditation, administered by UK Athletics, which ensures that athletics facilities are safe and well managed. It also means competitions held at the facility will be recorded and officially recognised.
