Local tradespeople join DIY SOS at new youth centre in Beverley

The efforts of local tradespeople have been praised as Beverley’s DIY SOS project nears completion.

The BBC’s DIY SOS project in Beverley is well underway with tradespeople from across the region giving up their time to help the efforts.

The project, which seeks to build a new youth centre for the Cherry Tree Community Centre in Beverley, began on Wednesday, May 14, and is set to be completed this week ahead of a grand unveiling on Thursday, May 22.

Countless people from in and around Hull and East Yorkshire have gone to help on the build’s site on the land off Burton Road to help the efforts. Amongst these were Reece, Sara, and Maxine from St Michael’s Youth Project in Orchard Park in Hull.

St Michael’s Youth Project had their own DIY SOS project in 2021 so their team were keen to come to Beverley to give back and help this project. “We really appreciated the help DIY SOS gave us,” Maxine told LDRS. She added that the new Cherry Tree youth centre is “much needed.”

REACT Disaster Response have a long standing working relationship with DIY SOS and help organise volunteers who turn up to help to ensure that the builds can be done in the most efficient and safe way possible. The REACT Disaster Response team expressed special thanks to Beverley RUFC for letting them camp on their site whilst the build is ongoing.

Local Beverley tradesmen Jack Butterworth and Phil Cawood of PC Plastering and Tiling expressed their delight at being able to help out on the project. Phil explained that he had a spare afternoon so decided to make his way down and help out. He said: “I was surprised by how many people have shown up.”

DIY SOS’ very own Billy Byrne also praised the effort. He told LDRS the support on offer had been “absolutely unbelievable” and “an amazing feat.” He added: “Everyone is aiming for the same target, to get the youth centre up and running.”
