National Highways to take action to prevent further A63 flooding

National Highways said it has been taking action to prevent further closures on the A63 after overnight heavy rain led to one side of the dual carriageway shutting leading to long travel delays through the rush hour and beyond. A section of the westbound carriageway was closed throughout Friday morning with drivers being diverted onto alternative routes.

The Clive Sullivan Way section of the A63 was closed heading away from Hull between the St Andrew’s Quay exit and the A15 junction due to “flooding caused by heavy rainfall in the early hours of this morning”. National Highways said: “Humberside Fire Service attended the scene to assist with pumping out surface water.”

There was also a closure on the A63 one day last month following heavy rainfall which led to to standing water on the road. Concerned such closures could recur with further rainfall expected in the coming days in relation to Storm Amy, LDRS asked National Highways if they are working to establish if there is an underlying issue causing the flooding.

During the closure period on Friday morning, a spokesperson explained: “The gulleys and drains are currently being cleared in preparation for the further heavy rainfall forecast to occur later today, with the aim of preventing further closures.”

At around 11.30am it was confirmed the clearance work had been completed and workers were “in the process of reopening the carriageway”.
