National Highways has altered the schedule of overnight closures planned for this month on the A63.
The A63 Castle Street project, which started more than five years ago, seeks to take a section of the A63 into an underpass, allowing Ferensway to connect with Commercial Road at ground level. In December, the £355 million project, had its expected completion date delayed by a full year to Spring 2026.
National Highways explained this delay by saying they had “encountered some extremely challenging ground conditions near the Humber that could not have been anticipated before the scheme began”.
The most recent ‘milestone’ in the project was hit in March when 1124.6 cubic metres of concrete was poured into the site, creating fourteen base slabs.
Due to the nature of the roadworks taking place, several sets of closures have been in place in recent months so that work on the ambitious project can be undertaken without traffic on the carriageway. However, National Highways issued an updated schedule for overnight closures for May with many of them “no longer required”, including those this week, after previously being announced in March.
All closures going ahead are between 8pm and 6am unless stated:
- Monday, May 12 – Friday, May 16 – closures no longer required
- Monday, May 19 – Friday, May 23 – closures no longer required
- Wednesday, May 28 – Friday, May 30 – overnight closures (delayed westbound closure until 10:30pm for Hull KR v Saints fixture on Friday 30 May)
A National Highways spokesperson has provided an update on the project and the cancelled overnight closures. They said: “At the moment, we are working on the base of the underpass and completing concrete pours in the remaining slabs, which is quite complex in terms of access for machinery.
“The changes to the planned overnight closures were due to a slight resequencing of works, which can be combined into our future plan of activities over the next few weeks, without impacting on the programme.”
