Plans to solve ‘pinch point’ on Wincolmlee in Hull

Plans hoping to solve an infamous traffic ‘pinch point’ have been submitted to Hull City Council.

The planning application seeks to solve a traffic ‘pinch point’ on Wincolmlee, near the roundabout that connects the road with Air Street and Bank Side.

Just south of the roundabout there is a section of the road that requires drivers to be highly alert and cautious as the road becomes particularly narrow with buildings on both sides positioned directly adjacent to the carriageway. As this section of the road is also on a slight curve, drivers often have to significantly slow down in order to pass through safely.

The narrow road often leads to drivers being forced on to the footpath, to the detriment of pedestrian safety, according to submitted documents. Planning documents also explain that due to the industrial nature of the area, HGVs regularly travel through the ‘pinch point’ and are “often forced to stop or force on coming vehicles to either stop or make abrupt movements due to the narrowness of the road.”

The planning application seeks to solve this by demolishing the building on the eastern side of the road, which in turn would allow for the road to be widened an extra 1.2 metres, therefore aiding traffic flow. According to planning documents, the building has been empty for a number of years having formerly been a music venue. The plans also propose the removal of two defunct pipe bridges that span the road.

Following the proposed demolition, a new 2.5 metre high fence would be erected around the site. This fence would be set back 1.8 metres from the newly widened road.

This application will now be decided upon by Hull City Council.
