Hull’s Victoria Pier is to be removed, Hull City Council has confirmed. The structure on the Humber Estuary, has been closed to the public since 2022 when inspections revealed it was in very poor condition.
Due to its condition, the council has now announced the existing pier will be removed to ensure public safety. The time frame for this work has yet to be determined.
The council say it is committed to investing in a replacement for the site and are inviting the public to help shape the design of the new layout. Mason Clark Associates have developed three potential outline design options which the public will have the chance to vote on. The chosen option will then be developed further into a detailed design.
Cllr Mark Ieronimo, the council’s cabinet portfolio holder for transport and infrastructure said: “Victoria Pier is an important part of Hull’s Maritime history. We know how much it means to our residents, and this poll is a vital step towards the pier once again becoming a welcoming space for residents and visitors to enjoy and reflect on our city’s heritage.
“When the poll opens, it will give everyone a chance to vote on how they want the pier to look – by choosing the layout they feel is most suitable – ultimately leading to a pier for future generations to enjoy.” Further information about the poll, including its launch date, will be shared in the coming weeks.
The capital programme in the council’s budget, which was passed last week, includes funding for the pier. The pier is listed as a priority, within the ‘Roads & Infrastructure’ section of the programme. Between the 2026/27 and 2027/28 financial years, £4.4 million is allocated for pier.
