Security improvements at Hull’s Osborne Street car park

Following the award of £46,975.23 in funding from the Hotspot Response Fund at the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner, security upgrades have been made at Osborne Street car park .

With the aim of addressing issues of anti-social behaviour, the funding has been used to install 14 new CCTV cameras on the stairwells, an area historically not monitored by the council.

Additionally, the software for the 50 existing CCTV cameras on the parking levels has been upgraded to ensure seamless integration with the council’s Civic system, enabling live viewing of all cameras, both old and new.

To further improve security, all new cameras are designed to be durable, with the cables protected by secure steel housing, ensuring long-term functionality and protection. An additional rooftop CCTV camera has also been installed, providing comprehensive coverage of the car park.

Kerry Ryan, head of transport and traffic management at Hull City Council, said: “We are thrilled to have received this funding, which has enabled us to make substantial improvements to the security at Osborne Street car park.

“The integration of new and upgraded cameras into our Civic system will greatly enhance our ability to monitor and respond to incidents in real-time. This capability allows us to swiftly identify and address any issues, ensuring a prompt and effective response to anti-social behaviour or security concerns.

“By having a comprehensive and integrated CCTV network, we can now maintain a higher level of vigilance, ensuring a safer environment for all car park users.

“We hope these safety enhancements will not only deter anti-social behaviour but also make the car park more welcoming for residents and visitors alike.”

Tracy Harsley, assistant director for Citysafe at Hull City Council, said: “The safety of Osborne Street car park has been a serious concern for our residents and visitors, and this funding has helped us tackle these concerns head-on.

“The installation of new durable cameras in previously unmonitored areas of the car park will act as a strong deterrent to those engaging in anti-social activities. By improving our surveillance capabilities and working closely with our partners, including Humberside Police and the outreach team, we can create a safer and more secure parking facility.

“We are grateful for the support from the Police and Crime Commissioner for Humberside. This project is a significant step towards reducing crime and enhancing public confidence in our efforts to create safe and welcoming neighbourhoods.”

Jonathan Evison, Police and Crime Commissioner for Humberside, said: “I am delighted to have supported the installation of CCTV cameras to ensure residents and visitors can feel safe using the car park in the city. The cameras will help deter anti-social behaviour from happening in the area, as well as ensuring the car park users can feel safer.”
