Solar panels for public buildings across West Yorkshire

A swimming pool and a leisure centre in Bradford are among the sites that will benefit from funding to install solar panels on public buildings.

Great British Energy, the government’s publicly-owned clean energy company, has awarded mayoral authorities a share of £10 million in grant funding to roll out clean energy projects at the centre of communities.

In West Yorkshire the funding will be used to add solar energy to facilities including Bowling Pool and Sedbergh Leisure Centre.

The 10 projects in West Yorkshire are estimated to bring lifetime energy bill savings of around £8.2 million.

A previous report of West Yorkshire Combined Authority stated that the authority had applied for funding to install panels at Stainbeck Police Station, Pudsey Police Station, South Parade School, Ossett, Lotherton Hall Estate, Leeds, The Arium Plant Nursery, Leeds, Bowling Pool, Flockton Road, Bradford, Sedbergh Sports Centre, Bradford, Leeds Road Sports Complex, Huddersfield, Bradley Park Golf Course, Huddersfield, and Princess Mary Athletics Stadium, Cleckheaton.

Tracy Brabin, Mayor of West Yorkshire, said: “Transitioning to clean energy is a key part of our plan to build a net zero West Yorkshire by 2038.

“This investment will make our public buildings greener, warmer, and cheaper to run – helping us save taxpayers’ money and upgrade community spaces across the region.”
