Tesco website and app back up and running after suspected hack

October 24, 2021

Tesco's website and app are running as normal again after a suspected hack.

The website and app had been hit with outages over the weekend, meaning customers couldn't place or track orders.

Website users reported receiving an error message whenever they tried to access groceries or use the search bar to look up products.

But just in time for the start of the new week, Tesco announced that the problems were over.

A spokesperson said: "Our online grocery website and app are now back up and running. Our teams have worked around the clock to restore service, and we're really sorry to our customers for the inconvenience caused."

The supermarket giant said the problem was due to an attempt to "interfere" with its systems, but sought to reassure customers that there was "no reason" to believe their data was affected.

Customers were also told they might need to enter a virtual waiting room before accessing the site as Tesco tries to manage the initial flow of traffic.

The "planned" measure is regularly used at peak shopping times to ensure customers have a "smooth experience" on the site, the company added.

The issues came after Tesco saw online sales soar during the pandemic and lockdown.

These rose by 77% to £6.3bn between February 2020 and 2021, growing to represent nearly a fifth of sales over the winter period.

Weekly delivery slots more than doubled to 1.5 million over the 12 months.
