North Yorkshire libraries will be keeping the little ones entertained with a jam-packed schedule of events from June 7 to 12.

From June 7 pre-school children can take part in Buzzy Bee’s Honey Hunt, a free scheme that rewards young children who borrow books from the library with cards, stickers and a certificate.

A set of colourful cards designed by local artist Wendi New and depicting locations across North Yorkshire will be given to each child as they progress through the scheme. The cards are designed to encourage discussion about the pictures and feature popular songs and rhymes to share.

As well as joining the Honey Hunt, all children under five who visit the library to borrow either four books or a staff selected book bundle will receive a free goody bag including crafts and musical instruments.

North Yorkshire County Councillor Greg White, Executive Member for Libraries, said: “Enjoyment of books is a key factor in nurturing a child’s development and preparing them for school. Reading to your child increases their vocabulary, develops their imagination and builds their self-esteem. Libraries provide a welcoming, safe space for children where they can discover whole new worlds to explore.”

There will also be a series of free online events on the Library and Information Service Facebook page. These include:

  • Folktales and songs from Hoglets Theatre Company on Tuesday June 8, Thursday June 10 and Saturday June 12, all at 10am;
  • Learn lullabies and songs with Thula Mama on Friday June 11 at 10am;
