Man arrested after Irish police officer killed in shooting

June 18, 2020

An Irish police officer has died after being shot in Castlerea, Co Roscommon, on Wednesday night.

Police in Castlerea, 125 kilometres north-west of Dublin, said the incident happened just before midnight, and that a man is being detained in connection with the matter.

The Garda Representative Association said the detective was from Co Mayo and had been a member of the police for 25 years. The GRA said he is survived by his father, sister and four brothers.

Police have closed Castlerea's town centre to traffic as investigations continue in the town of less than 2,000.

The force said in a statement: "It is with deepest sadness An Garda Siochana confirms the death of our colleague, resulting from fatal gunshot wounds received during an incident in Castlerea shortly before midnight on Wednesday 17th June 2020."

The force said it would identify the officer once next of kin had been informed.

In a statement, Ireland's Prime Minister Leo Varadkar extended his sympathies to the family and friends of the police officer who was shot dead.

"I extend my deepest sympathies to the family and friends of the Garda who has died in the course of their duties," he said.

"Every day our Gardai put themselves on the front line of crime prevention, on behalf of all of us.

"This requires regular acts of bravery and courage. Sometimes the outcome is tragic and a Garda makes the ultimate sacrifice in the course of their duties.

"Our thoughts today are with all those grieving as a result of this tragic incident."

He is the 89th member of the force to be killed in the line of duty.
