Emergency services called to ‘serious incident’ in tiger enclosure at UK zoo

The Yorkshire Wildlife Park, near Doncaster, said in a statement: “Our emergency response procedures were immediately activated, and emergency services are currently attending the scene.

“We are working closely with the authorities to ascertain exactly what happened.”

It added that the “safety and wellbeing of visitors, staff and animals remain our highest priority”.

The park has been closed and is to remain closed on Sunday.

Based on the outskirts of Doncaster, the park describes itself as a “walk-through wildlife adventure” that houses animals including lions, giraffes, tigers, leopards and black rhinos.

Its website says a 300 metre-long raised walkway runs through the ‘Land of the Tigers’ section, from which visitors can spot the animals roaming around.

Yorkshire Ambulance Service said it was called out to an incident at 1.30pm on Saturday.

“We sent a number of resources, including two land ambulances, the Yorkshire Air Ambulance and a doctor,” a spokesperson said.

South Yorkshire Police said it had “received reports of a man entering a tiger enclosure at Yorkshire Wildlife Park”.

“The tiger has subsequently attacked the man and this has resulted in serious injury,” officers added, saying they were trying to make contact with the man’s family.

They said the tiger “remained in the enclosure” and there was “no wider risk to the public.”

The park was subsequently evacuated, while officers remained on the scene to investigate, the police confirmed.
