Greater Manchester Police said officers responded to reports of an assault on South Parade in the town, where a 52-year-old man was found unconscious.
He was taken to hospital where he later died.
Two men have been arrested and remain in custody for questioning.
Detectives are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident or has relevant CCTV, mobile phone or dashcam footage to come forward.
